The need of the second degree arises in case of persons, holding a non-nursing degree and they are required to get a nursing degree to make a changeover to nursing career. Samford University School of Nursing:

It was established in 1842 and it is a large university with private support and having fully-accredited institution having facility for high learning located in Alabama.

The Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing was established for hospital diploma program in 1922. In 1955, it acquired the distinction of the first program in the state of Alabama having accreditation with the National League for Nursing (NLN).

The program was transferred to Samford University in 1973 as a consequence of a merger agreement with Baptist Medical Centers to offer Associate and Baccalaureate degrees in nursing.

In 1988 the School shifted to its new facilities premises situated at the Dwight and Lucille Beeson Center for the Healing Arts, located on the Samford Campus.

In 1995, the School started a Master of Science in Nursing degree program. Another program leading to Doctor of Nursing Practice degree was added in 2008.

Bachelor of Science in Nursing:

One can make the entry as a fresh and complete the program in the duration of 4 years leading to the degree of BSN. After achieving the BSN degree one can appear in the licensing examination NCLEX-RN to complete the registration of Registered Nurse in the state.

The Second-Degree BSN Option:

The Second-Degree option consisting of 5 semesters is a facility to persons, who are already holding a baccalaureate degree in a discipline of education other than nursing and desire to get a nursing degree. Such candidates after completing graduation in respect of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, one becomes is eligible to appear for the licensing examination for registered nurses [NCLEX-RN].

Accelerated Second-Degree BSN Option:

Accelerated Second Degree BSN option lasting over a period of 15 Months. The accelerated opportunity is for persons, who already hold a baccalaureate degree in a discipline other than nursing to accomplish a nursing degree. On completing the graduation leading to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree, the person becomes eligible to appear in the licensing examination for registered nurses [NCLEX-RN].

Master of Science in Nursing (MSN)

The Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing makes available with flexibility and innovation program to achieve Master of Science in Nursing degree. Such graduates become proficient for practicing to play an advanced role for meeting and/ or managing health care need of families during their life span.

The basics of MSN program stresses on the synthesis of theory, practice and research foundations necessary for advanced practicing of nursing. The BSN graduates are adequately qualified for assuming leading roles of being clinicians, managers, nurse executives and faculty members in broad range of healthcare providing services and academic environments.

The graduation course has been formulated for meeting the requirements of full and part-time students. The Classes are usually online having requirement of few campus visiting, when required. The Clinical experiences of the MSN graduate is offered in varied environments, which have a bearing on the individual requirements of students. There are provisions of Special Channels of study are available in the following positions:

  • A Family Nurse Practitioner.
  • Management aspects of Nursing.
  • Nurse Educator Status.

Nurse Anesthesia Program:

The Nurse Anesthesia course is a 28-month course of education, which awards the Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) degree to the enrolled students. After the graduation the candidate is eligible to appear for Nurse Anesthesia National Certification Examination.

RN to MSN Option:

The RN to MSN Option is other than traditional education leading to Master of Science in Nursing degree. This program permits the registered nurse having current unencumbered RN license and holds an Associate of Science in Nursing degree or hospital diploma. The opportunity is to acquire the MSN degree. In the RN to MSN Option, there is no necessity of bachelor’s degree. Thus the student may fulfill the need of MSN degree in very short time. The stipulated classes to be attended with this option are few considering enough practical experience. The classes are online with the need of few campus visits. The exception is of Nurse Anesthesia students to whom RN to MSN Option is not offered.

Post-MSN Study Channels:

Students having completed a Master of Science in Nursing Degree have access to the opportunity to achieve Post-Master’s certificates in the following specializations:

  • Post MSN/Management Practitioner.
  • Post MSN/Family Nurse Practitioner.
  • Post MSN/Education provider.

Degree of Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
