Secrets of Learning at CNA Training Schools

CNA training program is approved by State Nursing Board which is comprised of 75 to 100 hours training depending upon the particular state, where one wants to work. To become eligible for the CNA training one should hold 10th Standard diploma or GDA and physically fit to handle lifting of patients. The success of a CNA depends on strong passion to serve the ailing humanity.

CNA programs are taught at CNA training schools, which are located at all the community colleges, vocational training institutes and some schools also. During the CNA Training period, one learns theoretical part of the Working ambit of CNA. Besides the theoretical learning a CNA is required to get practical Clinical Experience at a real time health care facility. This training can last for few weeks to few months depending on the number of classes one attends in a week.

Most of the CNA training is confined to laboratory training, practical clinical instructions and related to various CNA duties one performs in the healthcare facility. All this training is accomplished through lectures by the faculty, role play demonstrations, training videos, formal discussion actual demonstrations. In the CNA trainings the stress is on the learning and perfection of CNA skills. The CNA skills can be further divided into following categories:

Learning People Skills:

While on the job a CNA has occasion to come across good people and bad people. It is part of CNA training at Schools, because patients in healthcare facility are emotionally disturbed and needs a specific attempt to ameliorate their emotional status by interacting positively with them so that they recognize the CNA with a different feeling in comparison to other people, who just come and go without touching their hurt feelings. CNA training schools refine the communication skills of a person by developing non-verbal communication most effective to attend critical patients on verge of dying and most his relations gathered waiting eagerly for the event to happen. One learns to manage the stresses caused by busy hectic day of activities.

Learning to Listen only:

One has two ears to listen more and one tongue to talk less, but often reverse happens one refuses to listen and does not stop talking. These are the extremes. There are stages of equilibrium also. If one talks less and listens more, there is better sense of understanding, which is required. One can adjust the equilibrium according to the need of the situation while communicating with patients, his relations, doctors and co-workers.

Learning to be Good Observer:

The useful CNA training program keeps in mind helping the CNA for developing observation pattern relying on which one is in position to locate anything uncommon. At many occasions patients do not knowing where or what is the problem? In such situations the CNA’s responsibility is to find out what is wrong by concentrating on patient’s abnormal actions, injuries, or anything, which is not looking normal.

Learning Deploying Physical Skills:

CNAs are required to perform lot of physical activity, while on duty. As a CNA, one should be adequately strong physically for handling the jobs of moving patients. The CNA also is required to be on the toes rushing from one place to another as a daily routine. Hence one should not feel any physical hindrance to affect the capability to walk all the time performing duty.

Demonstrations Packed CNA Training:

CNA training demonstrates the job related specific physical skills, which are done in an easy manner, without exerting too much so that one can work efficiently during the duty hours. CNA schools training introduces bed making of the patient which is comfortable, assisting the patients to bathe, dress and groom. One learns techniques of dressing wounds, feeding care of the patients including feeding involving food tubes in unconscious patients, techniques related to insertion of catheters and their removal.

There are lessons on nutrition, physiology and anatomy. One gains competence for measuring vital signs i.e. blood pressure, temperature, respiration, and pulse rate.

CNA schools also teach infection control and safety measures like disinfection of patient’s room and articles lying there. Additional care is required in respect of patients having unique requirements as in respiratory diseases, organs impairment and diabetes. CNA training also includes topic related to patient rehabilitation.

CNA training to be summed up relates to learning skills, gaining knowledge and behaving confidently, which all success characteristics in every sphere of CNA job.

CNA Certification Examination:

After the CNA training is completed, one is eligible to appear in state sponsored CNA certification examination, which has two parts one being theoretical part regarding what one has learned in CNA training School and the other is CNA Competency skills test, where one has to demonstrate before an examiner few practical Clinical skills, which the CNA shall be routinely carry out while working at the job.

By passing both the above examination one gets certified with registration of particulars at the Registry maintained by the State Health Board.

The certification is valid for a period two years. Once within the period of 24 months one has to again pass a brief test to validate the CNA certification for another period of 2 years.

Having a valid CNA certification, one can work in a health care facility, a hospital or a nursing home as Certified Nursing Assistant under the supervision of a Registered Nurse. A CNA is also called a care giver, Nurse aide, or Home health aide depending on the facility one is working in. The need of CNA is very high, because of increasing number of elderly persons admitted for treatment of various diseases.
